Miyazaki, Japan

Miyazaki, located on Kyushu's southeastern coast, offers an enchanting blend of ancient mythology and modern adventure. This renowned haven for outdoor enthusiasts boasts spectacular coastal drives along pristine shorelines and houses seaside shrines steeped in legend. The sacred trio of Miyazaki Shrine, Amanoiwato Shrine, and Takachiho Shrine holds profound significance in Japanese creation mythology, marking the legendary birthplace of Japan itself. Volcanic black sand beaches popular with surfers fringe the city, and local specialties include Miyazaki beef, shochu distilled from sweet potatoes, and fresh seafood are on the menu at eateries all around town. Dramatic natural wonders abound in this region, and the towering basalt cliffs of Takachiho Gorge and its thundering 17-meter Manai Falls are outside the city, but within reach.
