Salerno

Nestled on the eastern edge of the beautiful Amalfi Coast, the town of Salerno offers a blend of rich history and modern Italian charms. The historic city center is a maze of cobbled streets, vibrant piazzas and landmarks like the 11th-century Salerno Cathedral, a pilgrimage site believed to house relics of Saint Matthew in its elaborate crypt adorned in brilliant frescoes. The palm-lined waterfront promenade of Lungomare Trieste invites a seaside stroll, while the hilltop Castello di Arechi provides sweeping views from above. Not far from the lesser-known gem of Salerno are more famous neighbors such as Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, enchanting towns lying along a coastline so scenic that it has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. A boat trip along these shores may find you in Amalfiā€™s glowing Emerald Grotto or the equally dazzling Blue Grotto on the island of Capri. Northwest of Salerno, explore the ruins of Pompeii, remarkably preserved in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, or travel to Naples to discover castles and catacombs and dine on Neapolitan pizza.
