In Alaska, the landscape feels immediate and alive, so the ability to experience it at close range is a true luxury. Luminara, the newest yacht in The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet, offers access to sites and ports larger ships cannot reach, creating unique opportunities to observe whales, bears, and seabirds in their natural habitat. Each onshore excursion in Alaska — whether by kayak, Zodiac, helicopter, or on foot — is similarly designed to engage you in these moments, rather than simply observing them from a distance.

Glacial Wonders in Prince William Sound and Valdez

Accordion Details

In the glacial corridors surrounding Valdez, on the shores of Prince William Sound, the experience begins at water level. A guided kayak journey through Valdez Glacier Lake brings you close to the landscape, paddling through narrow channels and a shifting maze of icebergs. Wildlife is never far, from sea otters and harbor seals to the occasional orca moving through the sound. The experience feels both vast and intimate; quietly immersive and deeply memorable.

For a different perspective, helicopter landings provide rare opportunities to land on the ancient blue ice of the Columbia Glacier. Surrounded by blue-veined formations and snow-covered peaks stretching to the horizon, the scale of Alaska becomes unmistakable. Sweeping aerial views give way to profound stillness on the glacier itself, providing access to otherwise unreachable terrain.

Icy Strait Point: Close Encounters on Chichagof Island

Accordion Details

Further southeast, Icy Strait Point on Chichagof Island is home to the highest concentration of bears in the world and offers unparalleled wildlife viewing. From a Zodiac or small boat, watch as bald eagles circle overhead while humpback whales surface and feed nearby. Guided paddles along the Hoonah coastline reveal sheltered coves and forested hillsides, with naturalists sharing their expertise about the local marine environment. Kayaking and ocean rafting provide remarkable views of the flora and fauna from the sea.

On shore, a guided utility task vehicle (UTV) excursion follows remote logging roads through dense forests, climbing toward elevated vantage points where brown bears may be seen foraging along the shore. With fewer visitors and limited access, the area is a quieter, more direct connection to Alaska’s coastal ecosystems.

Haines: Aerial Spectacles in the Valley of the Eagles

Accordion Details

Haines, a picturesque port near the Lynn Canal just beyond Glacier Bay, is known as the Valley of the Eagles, home to one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the world. Each fall, thousands gather along the Chilkat River in one of Alaska’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles.

Exploration here moves easily between forest, water, and shoreline, from guided hikes through coastal terrain to kayaking along glacier-fed waterways that mirror the surrounding peaks. An exclusive landing at Eldred Rock Lighthouse, more than a century old, adds a layer of maritime history, while small-group excursions create close encounters with bears, eagles, sea lions, seals, and more.

Sitka: An Intersection of Volcanic Landscapes and Native Culture

Accordion Details

Sitka, once the capital of “Russian America,” is now known for its rich Native culture, historic sites, and ample wildlife. On Kruzof Island, guided all-terrain vehicle excursions climb to the rim of a volcanic crater where brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer roam freely. Elsewhere, land and sea experiences come together by boat, with opportunities to spot whales, sea otters, and sea lions along the way.

A visit to the Medvejie Hatchery in Bear Cove offers insight into the region’s salmon ecosystem, while kayaking with expert guides reveals sea stars below the surface and seabirds overhead. Along the shoreline, sea lions call from rocky outcrops and humpback whales breach in the distance.
